Dealing with the Consequences of Violence

Violence may occur in the workplace in spite of preventive measures. Employers should be prepared to deal with the consequences of this violence by providing an environment that promotes open communication and by developing written procedures for reporting and responding to violence. Employers should offer and encourage counseling whenever a worker is threatened or assaulted.

“What Would You Do If” Scenarios

Test out your understanding of violence containment principles in the following scenarios. In each case, think about what you would do prior to reading our suggestions.

Feel free to adapt or even challenge our suggestions. You may be able to come up with better responses, particularly as they apply to your environment or personal attributes (e.g., security or law enforcement expertise, martial arts training, gender, size and physical presence, personality, interpersonal skills, etc.).

Scenario #1: The Drunken Contractors (alternate version)

Several individuals on a contractor crew drink their lunch. Unlike the version of this scenario in Step #3, however, they are not stopped at the employee entrance and they return to work in the machine room. An argument ensues in the area of their job boxes—providing abundant tools as potential weapons.

Suggested Response:

Immediately notify security and the police. Secure all entrances to the machine room and clear all adjacent rooms and hallways. Alert health services. Be ready to provide:

1. A description of the machine room and its contents and whether other employees also are in the room.

2. A physical description of the drunken contractors: age, weight, hair color and length, clothing, facial hair, and any other distinguishing features.

3. Observations of their behavior since returning from lunch.

Wait for security and/or police to arrive. Take no precipitous action.

Scenario #2: The Terrorist

Al Kyda has created an explosive device from materials available at the facility (or smuggled in). Al has taken over the cafeteria, where he is holding about twenty employees hostage.

Suggested Response:

Immediately notify security and the police. Secure all entrances to the cafeteria and evacuate the facility. Alert health services. Be ready to provide:

1. A description of the cafeteria.

2. A physical description of Al: age, weight, hair color and length, clothing, facial hair, and any other distinguishing features.

3. All information known about Al. If he is an employee, locate his manager and HR representative.

Wait for security and/or police to arrive. Take no precipitous action.

If Al contacts you with demands prior to their arrival, apply the coping guidelines from Step #3 and agree to all his demands where possible and within reason. At a minimum, tell him that you are communicating his demands to those who can make them happen.

Case Studies

The following case studies are provided to help you think through similar incidents, and to determine if your prevention and response plans are adequate?

Case Study One—Domestic Violence in the Workplace

A female employee had broken off a romantic relationship with a male coworker, but he wouldn’t leave her alone. She finally had a restraining order served to him. After receiving the restraining order, the perpetrator lost control and entered the woman’s office. He hit her; she fell from her chair.
